1st Grade Language Arts

This course is designed to develop reading and writing skills.  The focus is on understanding written and oral English Language conventions.  Students will develop vocabulary and fluency as they complete the following lessons:

• Generate the sounds from all the letters and letter patterns, including consonant blends and long- and short-vowel patterns and blend those sounds into recognizable words.
• Write and speak in complete,coherent sentences.
• Read compound words and contractions.
• Read inflectional forms and root words.
• Read common word families.
• Identify and correctly use singular and plural nouns.
• Identify letters, words, and sentences.
• Distinguish initial, medial, and final sounds in single-syllable words.
• Distinguish long- and short-vowel sounds in orally stated single-syllable words.
• Segment single syllable words into their components.
• Identify text that uses sequence or other logical order.
• Retell the central ideas of simple expository or narrative passages.
• Use context to resolve ambiguities about word and sentence meanings.
